Robert M. Smith
Member of "the Temagami 22" International artists
Robert was born and raised in Cobalt, Ontario (Canada). With forests, lakes
and rivers all around he had an affinity for anything wild. As a youngster
he developed a strong desire to draw and be creative. In a small mining
town, however, the opportunity for formal art training was not available so
he had to find some way to teach himself. It wasn't until his late twenties
that he started to dabble in art more seriously while continuing with a
business career. But because of specific eye-sight problems he chose and
mastered the medium of charcoal to the point of high-realism . and
subsequently patented a unique technique dubbed "brushed charcoal". As time
wore on Robert sought greater challenges and finally went into the field of
watercolour. This was a daring step for one who is partially coloured-blind
and colour-ignorant!
Once again, he had to teach himself many of the aspects of this new medium.
By studying Glen Loates or [Fenwick] Lansdowne paintings for hours .
removing layer after layer of paint in his mind . and then basically
repainting the subjects in his mind as well. After applying many of their
best techniques and also developing some of his own, he now has a certain
"style" that is uniquely his. Upon acquiring some recognition [after many
years of work] for his paintings various nature magazines and people around
the world began to notice them. Private and corporate clients from Europe,
the United States, and even New Zealand have added some of his work to their
collections.
His artwork is all about the main subject. By using an "oriental style" of
floating the subject in a sea of white, the intrinsic beauty of the creature
can be seen at its best. Being what some call a "fur and feathers" man .
applying intricate detail and accuracy to the subject, the main subject then
becomes the true artwork! Each thing has an inherent beauty of its own and
is, therefore, a piece of art created by an Artist that is far greater than
all of us - God, Himself. Robert's paintings are merely trying to bring out
that artistic beauty that already exists.
His work may now be obtained through King's Framing and Art Gallery of Corbeil, Ontario [telephone: 705-752-4211; website: www.kingsframingandartgallery.com] where he is currently a member of "The Consolidated Group of 7's".
