Brian Chute

Brian's artistic voyage started in grade 2 when he won a colouring contest and a new bike while living in Owen Sound. Throughout elementary school, teachers were always advising Brian to pay more attention in class and stop drawing in his work books. In grade 8, he won a city-wide Safety Poster contest in Peterborough with the slogan, "It's wise to protect your eyes" featuring an injured owl. Oil painting classes came next thanks to his artist uncle, Lloyd Chute. Art, History and Geography were his favourite subjects in high school and would influence his painting style later.

Three university degrees, marriage, three children and a secondary school teaching career in North Bay would consume his time over the next 35+ years.

Brian recently returned to acrylic painting in his retirement thanks to the encouragement of his wife, Nancy and the suggestions by Bruce St. Clair.

"I have so many pictures in my mind from travelling and in my imagination that they just spill out onto the canvas. I want to express the interplay between the landscape elements of plants, earth, sky and water. There is no better place for this than North America especially the north."

Brian's style is a naturalist one and is still evolving. "I try to let the viewer walk right into my paintings".

Brian is an example of 'It's never too late to return to a creative medium you love'. He is most proud of his grand daughters, Maya and Mikailey, who are young artists and crafters.
