When it comes to acrylic painting, there are a lot of tips and tricks that you need to understand before you get the hang of it.
If you’re a newbie to acrylic painting, here are some fantastic acrylic painting hacks to help you out with your next masterpiece!
Acrylic paint is medium bodied, which means that it’ll be better for you to use synthetic brushes. This is because their bristles are much stiffer than normal, and are often made of excellent quality. Don’t restrict yourself to brushes made of only natural hairs such as sable— instead, opt for brushes that spring up quickly when you bend them.
Mixing acrylic paints can be a challenge, but practice makes perfects.
Knowing the colour wheel really well can help you get a better idea about which colours to mix to get which shade. If you’ve got a palette knife, use that to mix the colours and shades. If you don’t have a palette knife, a simple plastic knife will do. However, do remember that some acrylic shades dry out darker, meaning you’ll probably end up with a different shade. That’s why you need to keep on trying out different shade compositions until you end up with the one you need.
Acrylic paints are notorious for drying out fast, and can’t be rehydrated unlike their watercolour and oil-based counterparts. Humidity, their composition, and many other factors contribute to them drying out quickly, making them a little difficult to work with.
A useful tip to work with acrylic paints is to paint larger compositions on your canvas first. Use a bigger brush for better application, and save the smaller brushes for the details you’ll fill out later. This way, your paints won’t dry out before you use them, and you’ll be able to effectively complete your masterpiece without wasting your shades! Alternatively, consider investing in a paint mister to keep them from completely drying out.
