The Healing Power of Art

Art is considered a therapeutic activity all over the world. Whether one’s a seasoned artist or somebody who just enjoyed colouring since they were a toddler, chances are that everybody’s experienced the healing powers of art one way or another.

This is perhaps why art museums are so relaxing for people, and a place where people often go to sort their thoughts. And perhaps also why art and craft related activities are encouraged in old homes and rehabilitation centers.

The simple fact is that art can make one happy, regardless of age, gender, race or cultureart goes beyond borders of all kinds!

Here’s how it impacts your life positively.

It’s a Beautiful Distraction

Art can serve as a wonderful albeit temporary distraction for people who suffer from mood disorders or anxiety disorders or from depression.

Whether it’s a stroll through an art gallery, colouring in a children’s art book, or a complex art project, art is something one can fully immerse in, in an attempt to distract one’s self from unwanted feelings or thoughts.

It Can Bring a Sense of Accomplishment

Art has no rules. You can take beetroot juice and splatter it all over your wall and call it art, and you’d be right. Everything that is created and reflects a person’s individuality and creative instinct is art even if it’s just a straight line.

This realization alone can give you a sense of accomplishment. Since there are no rules, you can do as little as you want or go all out to create your masterpiece!

Art Can Help One Feel Calm and Focused

Research shows that indulging in art can lower cortisol levels. These are stress hormones and are primarily why art therapy is an actual thing.

The fact is that art has a way of capturing one’s attention. Naturally when all of your senses are focused on what you’re creating, the stress triggers are momentarily forgotten.

It’s A Way to Channel Unresolved Emotions

Art is also an incredibly useful tool for self-expression. When creating art, one usually goes with their instincts, inspirations from the subconscious mind, and also their own feelings and emotions.

Art can get incredibly personal but laying it all out there on paper in a way that only you and a few other people would understand is a great way to vent without drawing too much attention to yourself. It’s very healing indeed.

It Can Help One Connect With Likeminded People

Creating or being interested in art can make one feel like they’re part of a community. It can also be a way to socialize by attending art workshops or other platforms.

Healing comes as much from being in like-minded company as staying in solitude. Art can draw you close to people who’d cherish you.
