Artists may use similar drawing tools and equipment, but many of them develop a signature style, whereas others continue to experiment well into their careers. Works of art are grouped into different styles based on technique, composition, and other factors.

These are some of the most common art styles:

Abstract Art

Works of abstract art are based on a subject from the real world, but they deviate greatly from the source. Artists use colours, shapes, forms, and patterns to present their interpretation of an object or scene. Because of this, subjects in abstract art are only vaguely recognizable as the real-world elements they’re based on.

Figurative Art

Figurative art is the opposite of abstract art, in that it tries to represent its subjects just like their real-world counterparts. Figurative art is often focused on human figures—and its themes and motifs are meant to be instantly recognizable. Elements of figurative art are also used in other art styles.

Geometric Art

Geometric art emphasizes sharp angles and geometric shapes instead of natural forms. Straight lines and clearly defined points are the hallmarks of this style. Compared to the freehand techniques used in other styles, geometric art is very precise. As such, it requires specialized tools in addition to professional paintbrushes.

Minimalist Art

Minimalist art is one of the rare art styles that restrict personal expression. Instead of adding their own perspective into their work, minimalist artists try to keep the focus on the art itself. Minimalist art deliberately keeps things simple while avoiding overly expressive compositions and themes.

Nature Art

Artists have been so heavily inspired by nature for such a long time that it’s become a separate style altogether. Flora, fauna, landscapes, seascapes, and even human beings in nature are common subjects for this style. Artists can opt for realistic depictions or take creative liberties to portray nature as they see it.

Portraiture

Portraiture is one of the oldest art styles and is still very popular after thousands of years. Portraits depict the appearance, expressions, style, or beauty of a person. Many artists use themselves as subjects—a category known as self-portraits. Portraits have a lot of variety, as they can be accurate representations, abstract depictions, or merely symbolic.
