Compressed Charcoal is a solid stick of pure, reformed wood charcoal. It produces deep, dense tones with a completely different texture to graphite. Available in three versatile grades, light, medium and dark, Compressed Charcoal is naturally water-soluble, allowing you to create interesting lines and wash effects.
Use this colour chart as an approximation of the actual colour. If exact colour matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.

Derwent Compressed Charcoal is a chunky block of pure charcoal. It’s great for using with our other charcoal products, or try it on its own for wide sweeping strokes using its side or the end for finer lines. If it’s really fine detail you’re after try our Derwent Charcoal pencils, and for just a hint of colour, there’s Derwent Tinted Charcoal. What a great family!
