Alizarin Crimson is the oldest synthetic deep red-crimson pigment. It is a lake pigment that will last for many decades when applied in strength and kept from direct sunlight. Alizarin is a treat to paint with; just the sheer joy of the depth and uniqueness of colour is invigorating. A beautiful bluish-red pigment from the staining family, Alizarin Crimson is listed on the basic palette of most artists.

Intense and dark in value, Alizarin Crimson mixes cleanly with most pigments to create dark mixtures and warm neutrals. Combining Aureolin (Cobalt Yellow) and French Ultramarine with Alizarin renders a surprising range of other colours resembling everything from Burnt Sienna and Umber to Payne’s Gray. At the same time, Alizarin Crimson with French Ultramarine creates an intense purple.

Unique Drawing Tool – Watercolour Sticks are an expressive and fun tool for drawing directly with watercolours. Comfortable to hold, and the tip can be sharpened for a more precise drawing tip. When sharpening, be sure to save the shavings; those are pure DANIEL SMITH watercolours! You can add water to the shavings and turn them into liquid paint in a small dish or container.

With DANIEL SMITH Watercolour Sticks, you can:

• Draw directly onto dry or wet paper for different line characteristics.
• Soften your lines with a wet brush.
• Blend colours with your wet brush both on the paper and Stick.
• Draw onto paper, then, with a wet brush, take up Watercolour Stick pigment and paint from that like you would with paint in a pan.
• Add water to create light washes using your brush.
• You can build up layers using the Watercolour Sticks for rich, saturated colours.
• Draw over painted areas with the Watercolour Sticks adding detail or line work.
• Create texture by applying the Watercolour Sticks in different ways, wet or dry.
