Hematite Genuine - Hématite Véritable

Hematite is ground from heavy, silvery-black, mineral-rich iron. The heavier iron particles settle in a thick wash, creating bold granulation; they are a soft dove gray in a thin wash. Hematite mixes beautifully with other colours, adding granulation and slightly neutralizing the mixed colour. A great technique for using Hematite Genuine is to draw branches with varying thickness using single brushstrokes; the lovely granulation naturally generates the bark's texture.

  • Lightfastness: I – Excellent

  • Staining: 2-Low Staining

Hematite is the traditional Greek name for bloodstone. When you paint, you can almost feel the pounding of the battle drums as ancient warriors covered their bodies with Hematite, believing they would be protected from mortal wounds. According to lore and superstition, large surface deposits of Hematite mark the site of hard-fought battles, where the blood of fallen soldiers flowed into the ground.
