Hematite Genuine - Hématite Véritable

Hematite is ground from a heavy silvery-black mineral-rich iron. The heavier iron particles settle in a thick wash, creating bold granulation; in a thin wash, it is a soft dove gray. Hematite mixes beautifully with other colours, adding granulation and slightly neutralizing the mixed colour.

One way to use Hematite Genuine is, with single brushstrokes, sketching in branches from thick to thin; the beautiful granulation automatically provides the texture of bark.

Hematite is the traditional Greek name, Bloodstone. When you paint, you can almost feel the pounding of the battle drums as ancient warriors covered their bodies with Hematite, believing they would be protected from mortal wounds. According to lore ad superstition, large surface deposits of Hematite mark the site of hard-fought battles, where the blood of fallen soldiers flowed into the ground.

When sharpening, be sure to save the shavings; those are pure DANIEL SMITH Watercolour! You can add water to the shavings and turn them into liquid paint in a small dish or container.

With DANIEL SMITH Watercolour Sticks, you can:

• Draw directly onto dry or wet paper for different line characteristics.
• Soften your lines with a wet brush.
• Blend colours with your wet brush both on the paper and Stick.
• Draw onto paper, then, with a wet brush, take up Watercolour Stick pigment and paint from that like you would with paint in a pan.
• Add water to create light washes using your brush.
• You can build up layers using the Watercolour Sticks for rich, saturated colours.
