R&F Pigment Stick - Lamp Black, 38 ml

This black is unusual for its bluish undertone and the grey that can be made with it. Mars Black takes its name from Mars, the Roman god of war and patron of iron. It is an iron oxide pigment developed in the 20th century. It is a dense, opaque black with slightly violet and grey undertones if extended. It mixes cleaner than other blacks. Mars is an excellent option for a quicker-drying black using the Pigment Stick line.

Permanence

Lamp Black is very lightfast and permanent. It is used in all techniques in permanent painting.

Toxicity

Lamp Black is slightly toxic by skin contact and inhalation. It is a possible human carcinogen.

History

Lamp Black is a carbon-based black traditionally produced by collecting soot (known as lampblack) from oil lamps. It is the black found in Egyptian murals and tomb decorations and was the most popular black for frescoing until the development of Mars Black.
