Derwent charcoal pencils are made from natural charcoal particles mixed with the finest clays and encased in a cedar wood barrel. An extensional range can also be achieved, mainly if water is used. Wet a previously worked area for even darker tones, allow it to dry, then work on it again. Use a putty rubber to 'take out' style as required for even lighter tones.
