Liquitex fluid mediums function much like their name implies; they are fluid and reduce the viscosity of heavier paints and gels. They typically self-level and do not retain brushstrokes. Liquitex fluid mediums modify acrylic paints in various ways and include acrylic resins to maintain or enhance adhesion and durability.

FLUID MEDIUMS

WHAT IS A MEDIUM

Mediums are made with acrylic resin and can be used to adjust how the paint works, feels and looks. They can be used to prepare your canvas, change the texture, adjust the flow, alter the working properties of the colour, or protect your painting. Because they include acrylic resin, mediums maintain or add to the stability of the paint film and can be used in any amount desired.

APPLICATIONS AS A MEDIUM

As an Extender: Mix with Liquitex Soft Body Artist Colour to extend volume and increase transparency while maintaining paint viscosity. Mix with Liquitex Heavy Body Artist Colour to extend volume and increase transparency while decreasing paint viscosity.

As a Fixative: Use as a fixative over artwork (acrylic paint, pastel, graphite, chalk) to increase gloss or shine. Mix 1 part Gloss Medium and Varnish to 1 part distilled water. Apply with an atomizer or airbrush.

As a Binder/Adhesive: Powdered pigments or aggregates may be mixed into Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish. However, they must be compatible with acrylics. Collage material may be glued using Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish as liquid glue.

As a Ground: Use as transparent ground for acrylic paint instead of gesso to allow the substrate to be seen. To prevent Substrate-Induced discolouration, wash cotton or linen canvas before use.

With Powdered Pigments: Use as a binder with powdered pigments to make inexpensive student-grade Soft Body gloss paint.
